Renal Fusion Anomalies: A Review of Surgical Anatomy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Congenital renal fusion anomalies, characterized by either partial or complete fusion of the two kidneys, are represented by horseshoe kidney, crossed renal ectopia with fusion and fused pelvic cake kidney. Though these anomalies may remain asymptomatic, in certain cases they may be associated with pathological conditions like nephrolithiasis, hydronephrosis, recurrent urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux and renal neoplasms. Concomitant congenital anomalies involving other organ systems observed with some renal fusion anomalies make them important clinical entities. Thorough knowledge of these renal fusion anomalies, associated renovascular abnormalities, pathologies and anomalies of other organ systems are most essential for appropriate patient management by urologists, surgeons, vascular surgeons and radiologists alike. This review focuses on the surgical anatomy of various renal fusion anomalies, their incidence, anatomical, radiological and pathological features and associated anomalies in the light of available literature.

Pancake kidney: An unusual type of renal fusion anomaly found in 99mTc-DMSA renal scintigraphy
A 2.5-year-old boy with a history of the previous incidental finding of an ectopic kidney in ultrasonography was referred to our nuclear medicine center for 99mTc-DMSA renal scintigraphy. The scan showed an unusual type of ectopic fused kidneys on the right side of the lower abdomen. In this anomaly, kidneys were fused completely across the medial portion of both upper and lower pole...

Renal fusion anomalies, in which both kidneys are fused togeher in early embyronic life, are rarely encountered. Once a fused kidney is diagnosed or suspected, further laboratory and imaging evaluation should be performed to assess the status of the kidneys and to look for treatable causes of renal pathology. The early dignosis of potential complications that can accompany this anomaly must be ...

The increased use of laparoscopic nephrectomy and nephron-sparing surgery has prompted the need for a more detailed radiological evaluation of the renal vascular anatomy. Multidetector CT angiography is a fast and accurate modality for assessing the precise anatomy of the renal vessels. In this pictorial review, we present the multidetector CT angiography appearances of the normal renal vascula...
